This article is about trade between Latin America and China. With the recent election of Trump into office, there are many mixed feelings circulating China on the other hand has been expanding their trading ports and have started a Belt and Road Initiative(BRI) China has now wanted to set up a megaport in Peru’s city, Chancay. It is said that the absent presence of America to southern america has set their bar low at an all time low, believing that China only has to be a little bit better in order to be besties with them. Many are saying that the US should see this as a threat and that this could potentially lead to a trade war between the US and China
Seeing as China was trying to get close with africa due resources, it doesn’t surprise me that they want relations with Latin America. We haven’t been all that nice and Trump is attempting to close boarders with Mexico and attempt to do the largest deportation of illegal immigrants in history. So why would Latin America like us now? We have not been good neighbors to them, we have set the all time low as a friend. China didn’t have a challenge when it came to being friends with Latin America and throwing the idea of creating a megaport in Chancay, Peru. So why would Latin America like us now?
I believe the people of Peru are quite happy with the idea of a major port in Chancay, and it may not effect many people’s opinion in America due to the fact that America has been so absent from the South. Where this may be more exciting for China and Latin America. Especially since China wants to initiate the BRI, AKA Belt road initiative, which is like the silk road but modern now. So what does that potentially mean for America? Again, I doubt they will care but if China continues to make relations with others around the world then this could lead ot a trade war like the article says.
This relates more to liberal theory that we were talking about today, you scratch my back I scratch yours. I do think that China’s BRI really shows show everything is really connected, they are just trying to do that more literally. But China having relations with Latin America shows how this will effect America. I don’t think that America should feel threatened, again this is an initiative to start something like the silk road again. But again this really shows how all over the world, stuff like this matters to countries all over the world. Like again, the US was quite absent, but now that China is coming wants to have a megaport in Peru..NOW we care.
