Over two dozen Christian and Jewish groups that represent millions of Americans filed a federal lawsuit on Tuesday against the Trump administration’s ruling that gives immigration agents a greater ability to arrest individuals in places of worship. The lawsuit claims that this new ruling will discourage migrants from attending religious services, services they otherwise would be attending. They claim it infringes on the group’s religious freedom to minister to migrants. A minister stated, “We can not worship freely if we are living in fear.” Defendants in the lawsuit are Homeland security, and they are saying that they are protecting these religious sites by preventing “criminal aliens and gang members from exploiting them.”
This article describes complex problems immigrants will face if they come to America. Because of Trump’s desire to focus on America and protect its citizens, it may lead to other issues arising. America, a country whose aim has always been to protect the freedom of the individual as much as possible, may change from this new order and other orders that follow. There is a changing sentiment in the country, and it could lead to fewer immigrants from neighboring countries such as Mexico and an uptick in Mexican foreign policy. I disagree with this ruling Trump has made, because I believe it is a huge violation of religious freedom.
Earlier this year, we discussed population pyramids – the demographic transition model. When a country starts out, they have equal displacement between living and dying. Next, they skyrocket as their population grows exponentially. Then, as a country gets further developed, their population starts to go down and eventually declines. Population decline is a huge problem – if you need an example just look at Japan. But the US, as developed as it is, has always managed to maintain a growing population through migration. With Trump’s changing foreign policy regarding migration, it will be interesting to see if our population goes down, and how that affects our standings in the global arena.
