Colombia’s Foreign Minister Rosa Villavicencio announced that she is renouncing her U.S. visa in protest of the U.S. State Department’s decision to revoke the visa of President Gustavo Petro. Petro’s visa was revoked after he took part in a pro-Palestinian rally in New York during the U.N. General Assembly, where he criticized U.S. policies and called on American soldiers to “disobey” orders he viewed as unethical. Colombia’s government portrayed the visa revocations as an infringement on its sovereignty and freedom of expression, stating that it will no longer accept “diplomatic visas that limit opinions”. The move by Villavicencio is largely symbolic — there is no formal mechanism for renouncing a U.S. non-immigrant visa. The event reflects an escalation in diplomatic tension between the U.S. and Colombia, complicated by disagreements over drug policy, Venezuela, and international alignments.
This is an example of how a small, negative, diplomatic gesture can lead into big problems with international relations. Side note, also an example of how the world is changing because the United States is pulling back it’s role as ‘world police’, leading into small crisis popping up around the globe. Colombia and the US have always had issues due to the lack of drug-trafficking control and the unstable and unwilling cooperation on how to correct the problem. If the two countries end up cutting ties, their trade export will shut down (colombia to us), and it may cause other Latin American states to question and even challenge US forces. The way this plays out might alter the way middle countries communicate with superpopwers.
In all, the Colombian government will use this as a time to promote their national unity to the world, and also lead as an example for the other states and portray how the US is overstepping it’s boundaries, and they will probably go find new alliances beyond us. On top of that, the US should explain more in depth as to why they revoked the visas, and they should work hard to fix their alliance with Colombia due to the massive trade expedition they have had fro years together. Colombian citizens may encourage the countries to stay aligned, in fear of harming both economies if the tie is broken between the two. Outsider countries will probably not intervene only due to fears of escalating the situation.
