President Donald Trump proposed a new plan that will require social media handles and other extra information to visitors under the visa waiver program. with the extra information needed to enter the country the amount of interest in either tourism or migration into America will decrease because humans tend to dislike systems that are difficult or annoying. The citizens, media, and immigration experts are not in support of the move by the president because of the already low immigration rates which will hurt the economy and population rate.
This article might not seem very important and the issue itself isn’t a first world problem. But, this could be the start to the talks of America ending up like their peers China and Russia where they’re starting to enter the fabled stage 5 of the demographic transition model. This 5th stage is when the population of a state is losing more than its gaining which can either be because of death and birth rates but also migration rates. China being in the 5th stage is the reason they’re projected to collapse in the 2030s, America can not keep on this track or else they will collapse just like China
If I were Trump my main goal would be to attempt to justify your choice by explaining that its for a national security measure as a social media screening would allow for a more thorough search to help identify security risks that are entering the US. I would also send out a PSA showing how a social media search would be useful in catch threats. If I was a tourist I would cease to consider America as a place to travel and spend my money in, which tourism makes up $3 trillion of all of America’s GDP.
This issue can connect to legitimacy because Trump’s legitimacy to run the immigration laws has decreased to the citizens of America because they believe he’s hurting the economy. This can be related to Interdependence through America’s reliance on the tourism industry and tightening the security would ruin this path. You could also say that America’s soft power was decreased from this event as the appeal of America after this new plan decreased and soft power is power that makes your country more appealing.
