Many are calling for a new election, however, including the secretary-general of the Organizations of American States (OAS), due to Hernandez’s mysterious 5% lead in the polls after technical problems caused the voting polls to “go down”. Nasralla has called for his supporters to protest the results of the election as well as met with OAS and the US Department of State in hopes for international attention.

This is not the first time an incident has occurred to skew the polls. When both candidates claimed victory in early December, the election was accused of being faulty at that time as well. A political analyst in the article suggested the members of TSE be refreshed in order to allow for an impartial and clean election. This, however, may be difficult to establish without foreign influence.

Salvador Nasralla has called his supporters to once again protest, however, this may prove to be a dangerous task. Undoubtedly, the protests will continue to heighten tension within the country and twenty-two individuals have already died due to the demand for a new election.

It will be interesting in the upcoming months whether or not other countries will become involved in Honduras’ discrepancy in their election. In my last analysis post, I stated that a new election would solve the issues concerning the fraud and irregularities, however, it seems that this is not the case. Honduras needs intervention in order to create an atmosphere suitable for a clear and legitimate election.

On Sunday, December 17th, Juan Orlando Hernandez was declared president, yet opposing candidate, Salvador Nasralla, refuses to accept the election results; he believes the election is flawed and Hernandez’s second term illegitimate.

[3

post-1183","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-analysis
["GET
