A new land grant was recently passed in Canada that could allow thousands of Sinixt people from the United States to hunt in Canada. It started with a man named Rick DeSautel being apprehended by British Colombian conservation officers after it was discovered he was an American citizen who shot and killed an elk on Canadian soil. His case ended up going to the Canadian supreme court, where he argued that because of his indigenous heritage he should be allowed to hunt in Canadian borders. Before the borders were drawn, the Sinixt territory extended from Washington state to the southern Canadian border. The supreme court ruled in his favor, meaning thousands of indigenous people could follow in his footsteps. This is only a Canadian law, however, and Canadian Sinixt people caught hunting or fishing in United States territories are still charged.<\/p>\n
Before this, the Sinixt people were considered ‘extinct’ in Canada, and this new law retains their ancestral rights on British Colombian soil.<\/p>\n
Racial tensions in Saskatchewan, Canada rose after a white farmer, Gerald Stanley, shot and killed 22 year old Colten Boushie, a amember of the Red Pheasant First Nation, after Boushie approached him for assistance when his tire blew out. A war broke out online, many claiming Stanley shot Boushie because he was indigenous, and others saying that he was trespassing and Stanley “should have shot all five [Boushie and his friends] and won a metal”.
