Six months after his election in 2013, Maduro announced that he would rule by decree for the rest of his presidency; he would haver the dictatorial power of creating law without the check of legislators. Maduro’s focus on public opinion rather than actual economic issues has caused massive amounts of inflation. Venezuela has been in an economic depression since 2014. Maduro gained popular support by basing is policies on those of the widely popular, former socialist president, Hugo Chavez. Though there is a good chance that Maduro will be kicked out of the presidency come the elections in April, there are many factors that may undermine this possibility. Democratic Opposition party leader Henri Falcon has recently been expelled from his party after announcing his candidacy against President Maduro, when the party proposed to boycott the Presidential elections due to it being rigged. Amongst this problem, Falcon, like Maduro, is a socialist that has strong connections to the former regime of Chavez. If Falcon were to win, it is unclear whether the implementation of more socialist economic policies will augment the recession and shortages throughout Venezuela. This is entirely evident when looking at the effect of Maduro’s Chavez-like policies on modern Venezuela; Venezuelans may have loved it back in the day of Chavez, but how will the continuation of his policies fair now? This division within the opposition and the lack of solid opposition candidates questions will question the possibility of Maduro being ousted from his position. However “Rigged” the election will be, it seems that for now, the people of Venezuela have little to vote for but the continuation of Chavez’ policies.

It is well known that the corrupt, leftist policies of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro have caused mayhem in the country.
