Various peace deals with the group were struck with FARC, resulting in the group being transformed into a political party. Now the country is anticipating tensions as the first presidential election under this arrangement approaches.

Columbia’s population remember’s FARC’s impact, including the death of hundreds of thousands of people during the civil war. As a result, most Columbians are resistant to FARC’s role as a key player in politics. One of FARC’s destabilizing strategies was also interfering in elections, making many citizens wary of how the group will behave as a political party in the upcoming election. The underlying conflict that many have with FARC is not a good sign for stability going forward.

The destabilized state that Columbia has been in for many years will be hard to recover from. But the nature of the current political situation creates an even greater challenge. Since the very same group that created so much conflict in the first place is now involved in the recovery process, the confidence and trust of the government has declined. Columbians cannot have faith in the fact that the two entities who provoked such a desperate condition can work together to rehabilitate the country. Despite the creation of the seemingly effective peace agreement, the actual divisions and tensions which arose during the civil war are really still present, albeit better hidden. The agreement does not, however, seem to be sustainable, and ultimately the conflict will probably devolve into a situation more similar to the one before the treaty was made.

Analysis: Colombia’s ‘fake’ peace in tatters Less than a decade ago, Columbia was a country engulfed in civil war, as the rebel militant group Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) fought the Columbian government.
