Normally when a product is becoming scarce, the price would go up, but with the coffee, the price hasn’t changed, in fact, it might’ve gone lower. In 1869, almost 150 years ago, this happened in Ceylon (now known as Sri Lanka). The “rust” affected their crops as well, and the country economically eventually plummeted and was almost wiped out, but they only reason that they were not wiped out by the “rust” is because Ceylon switched their major export to tea leaves and now Sri Lanka is the world’s fourth largest producer of tea leaves. But central America is not going to be able to switch their major export like Sri Lanka, Central America has been barely surviving on the little export of coffee that it is has now, and once the “rust” takes over all the crops because there is not a cure for it, the country will not have anything to export because they are highly unlikely to switch major exports. The world needs to see this as a major issue because even though there is not a cure for the “rust” disease, we can help give the country and the family farmers that are there aid. And hopefully further into the future, we can have the coffee prices go up, this may be very hard to have happen because so many people use coffee so why would anyone want to spend more for it? Well is the prices don’t go up, the country is going to decline more economically than it already is, more people are going to be out of a job, and that will cause them to come into our country. And there is the big chance that coffee will stop growing in central America altogether, so we could spend more on it now to help the government try to find a way to stop to spread, or we could spend less now but then never have coffee again in the future.

5 years ago central America was producing over 140,000 pounds of coffee, but in 2014 they have now been able to produce only 28,000 pounds of coffee with 80% of the country producing coffee beans. “Rust” is not the only problem that is affecting this country, it is also the extremely low prices for coffee.
