The Montreal Gazette reports, “QUEBEC \u2014 Education Minister Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Roberge has signed on to plans to temporarily house francophone students from the Commission scolaire Marguerite-Bourgeoys in schools run by the anglophone Lester B. Pearson board<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are, at the moment in the anglophone network, several classrooms that are free,\u201d Roberge said at a news conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs of January 2019, classes will be rented by the francophone network, which has an overpopulation. There are empty classes (in the anglophone system) and we will use them for the benefit of our children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roberge specifically mentioned<\/a> the situation at Marguerite-Bourgeoys and Lester Pearson, which have been in negotiations on the idea. Fifty new students a week are enrolling in Marguerite-Bourgeoys\u2019s schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The French board\u2019s high schools are so crowded that 60 new immigrants are receiving French instruction starting at 3:30 p.m., once classes in some schools are dismissed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About 12 of the board\u2019s 14 high schools are full and the board is operating 123 classes above its capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat is not acceptable is to have jammed schools, schools where there is no place to deliver professional services, with no cafeterias, no computer room or library and, a kilometre away, a school with five, six, 15 or 20 classes empty,\u201d Roberge said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are working on a solution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He insisted the rental option is temporary and over the long term the solution is a better distribution of schools between the francophone and anglophone networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually, he added, a permanent transfer of some buildings could happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such an operation would have to take place \u201cin a respectful manner for both networks,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The overcrowding situation has been around for months. The CSMB took over three schools that the Pearson board closed two years ago, but it is not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last June, Pearson offered the CSMB nine classrooms at Lindsay Place High School, six classes at Riverdale High School and three at Springdale elementary school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CSMB declined the offer and decided to put its students in mobile classrooms<\/a> instead.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
