{"id":2863,"date":"2019-01-10T01:39:53","date_gmt":"2019-01-10T01:39:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baileyonlineclassroom.com\/theamericasblog\/?p=2863"},"modified":"2019-01-10T01:39:53","modified_gmt":"2019-01-10T01:39:53","slug":"article-for-before-break-brazil-deploys-troops-to-stop-violence-in-fortaleza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baileyonlineclassroom.com\/theamericasblog\/2019\/01\/10\/article-for-before-break-brazil-deploys-troops-to-stop-violence-in-fortaleza\/","title":{"rendered":"Article for Before Break: Brazil deploys troops to stop violence in Fortaleza"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 300 troops have been sent to the north-eastern Brazilian city of Fortaleza to tackle a surge in criminal violence, authorities said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soldiers will patrol there and across the state of Cear\u00e1 in a bid to halt attacks on shops, banks and buses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The justice ministry ordered the special deployment after dozens of attacks this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attacks are a protest against new, tougher measures in local prisons, largely controlled by criminal gangs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prison authorities in the state have blocked mobile phone signals inside jails and ended a policy of separating inmates by gang affiliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The troop deployment comes just days after the inauguration of President Jair Bolsonaro, who was elected to office on the promise to fight rampant crime in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-46720899\">Brazil&#8217;s new far-right leader urges unity<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/resources\/idt-sh\/Jair_Bolsonaro_Brazil\">Jair Bolsonaro: Trump of the Tropics?<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Bolsonaro reportedly praised Justice Minister Sergio Moro&#8217;s decision to send in troops as &#8220;apt, rapid and effective&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-46063656\">Mr Moro previously led a vast investigation into Brazilian corruption<\/a>\u00a0known as Operation Car Wash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Security videos aired on Brazilian television show the gangs setting fire to service stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 50 suspects allegedly linked with the violence have now been arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to World Prison Brief,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.prisonstudies.org\/highest-to-lowest\/prison-population-total?field_region_taxonomy_tid=All\">Brazil has more than 700,000 people behind bars<\/a>&nbsp;&#8211; the third-highest prison population worldwide after the US and China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Bolsonaro, 63, won the presidential election by a wide margin against Fernando Haddad of the left-wing Workers&#8217; Party on 28 October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-45652518\">He is seen as a deeply divisive figure<\/a>&nbsp;whose racist, homophobic and misogynistic remarks have angered many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his inauguration speech the president pledged support for the military and police, saying: &#8220;The national motto is order and progress. No society can develop without respecting these.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an apparent reference to gun control, he said: &#8220;Good citizens deserve the means to defend themselves.&#8221; He recently tweeted that he would issue&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jairbolsonaro\/status\/1079006352503201792\">a decree to allow citizens who did not have a criminal record to own guns<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before becoming a politician, Mr Bolsonaro served in Brazil&#8217;s military, where he was a paratrooper and rose to the rank of captain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He retains close links to the armed forces.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>About 300 troops have been sent to the north-eastern Brazilian city of Fortaleza to tackle a surge in criminal violence, authorities said.
