The bus caught fire at a bus terminal that had recently been closed, since it is located next to a store that sells fuel illegally. Of the seventeen dead, four were children. In addition to the sale of illegal fuel, there were no fire extinguishers onboard or safety equipment of any kind. This highlights the dangers of the informal public transit system in Peru, in which unauthorized vehicles transport millions of people each day. Without the necessary equipment to stop the fire, the bus was completely burned to the frame- an event that could easily recur given the lack of safety measures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unfortunately, this is one of many situations in the world where people are harmed by both the sale of illegal items and sketchy, unauthorized transportation systems. I’ve read about ‘informal’ bus systems in South Africa which can endanger the lives of those onboard. It’s heartbreaking that innocent civilians (who likely had nothing to do with the illegal fuel), including families and children, were killed in this accident. The picture of the burned bus is particularly shocking- the sides are completely burned off. The worst part is that there is nothing anyone could have done to save the passengers, with no safety equipment! I can’t believe that even on a bus like this there would be absolutely no safety measures taken. Maybe 17 lives would have been saved if there were fire extinguishers onboard! Additionally, Peru (and Lima in particular), is an extremely unsafe country where events like this are unfortunately not uncommon. Even though this is not groundbreaking news, it’s still horrible to see everyday accidents such as this happening around the world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
In Lima, the capital city of Peru, a double-decker bus caught fire while illegally transporting fuel, killing seventeen passengers.
