{"id":3692,"date":"2019-04-11T03:48:32","date_gmt":"2019-04-11T03:48:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/baileyonlineclassroom.com\/theamericasblog\/?p=3692"},"modified":"2019-04-11T03:48:32","modified_gmt":"2019-04-11T03:48:32","slug":"brazil-shooting-10-soldiers-held-after-familys-car-riddled-with-bullets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baileyonlineclassroom.com\/theamericasblog\/2019\/04\/11\/brazil-shooting-10-soldiers-held-after-familys-car-riddled-with-bullets\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazil shooting: 10 soldiers held after family&#8217;s car riddled with bullets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten Brazilian soldiers have been arrested after their army patrol fired on a car carrying a family in the city of Rio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police accused the soldiers of firing more than 80 shots at the car, killing driver Evaldo dos Santos Rosa and injuring a passenger and a passer-by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Rosa was driving his family to a baby shower in northern Rio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigators believe the patrol mistook the family&#8217;s car for one of the same colour driven by gang members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;Victims of the military&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police who searched the family&#8217;s car said no weapons had been found inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Detective Leonardo Salgado said that the &#8220;family ended up being victims of the military&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The officer said that he could not see &#8220;a legitimate defence for the number of shots&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/997F\/production\/_106359293_032c1688-f10a-4966-be85-d0045b74e2cb.jpg\" alt=\"Luciana Nogueira, widow of Evaldo Rosa dos Santos, reacts at the Institute of Forensic Science, after recognizing the body of her husband, who was killed during a military operation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil April 8, 2019.\" \/><figcaption>Image captionLuciana Nogueira lost her husband Evaldo in the shooting<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soldiers have been charged with &#8220;noncompliance with the rules of engagement&#8221; and will be tried by a military court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Local media said that the soldiers were part of a routine patrol near a military installation but the incident nevertheless raises concerns over the deployment of troops to boost security in areas with high crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-46772508\">300 troops were sent to the north-eastern city of Fortaleza to tackle a surge in violent crime<\/a>&nbsp;and last year, then-President Michel Temer temporarily deployed the army to Rio state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some analysts also think that members of the security forces have become more trigger happy by the tough approach advocated by the new far-right President Jair Bolsonaro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-45774849\">Bolsonaro hands out tough anti-crime message<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-45732801\">Why are there so many murders in Brazil?<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the presidential campaign, Mr Bolsonaro said that police officers who shoot criminals dead should be decorated with medals. &#8220;If he [a police officer] kills 10, 15 or 20 with 10 or 30 bullets each, he needs to get a medal, and not be prosecuted,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;They kept shooting&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident in which Mr Rosa was killed happened on Sunday in the northern Guadalupe neighbourhood of Rio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A woman who was in the car with Mr Rosa, his wife, her stepfather and the couple&#8217;s seven-year-old son said the soldiers fired at them without any previous warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We got out of the car, I ran with the child and yet they kept shooting,&#8221; she told Globo TV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dozens of shots can be heard ringing out in a video recorded by a resident from a nearby building showing the white car stationary and its doors open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Rosa, a 51-year-old musician and security guard, died shortly after being shot. His father-in-law and a man who tried to help the family were both injured. It is not clear how serious the injuries are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The army&#8217;s eastern military command at first said that its men had been responding to &#8220;an unjust aggression by attackers&#8221;. The statement alleged that the military was shot at by &#8220;two criminals&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in a subsequent statement it said that the case would be investigated by military prosecutors after &#8220;inconsistencies&#8221; had been detected between how the incident was initially reported and information that came to the military command later.<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ten Brazilian soldiers have been arrested after their army patrol fired on a car carrying a family in the city of Rio.
