The Venezuelan economy solely relies on its oil, without it, the country would be in economic ruin. The sanctions were put into place in order to influence Venezuela to change its mind. I think it was a smart move by the United States to target what Venezuela relies on most, in order to persuade them to take alternative actions. However, Venezuela was able to find a way to evade the complications that the sanctions brought. The Venezuelan president is taking the money from the oil sales and sending it Rosneft, a Russian “energy giant”, to avoid the sanctions. The sanctions are forcing Venezuela to be dependent on Russia, pushing them further from the United States. Due to the sanctions, Maduro has accused Trump of waging an economic war against Venezuela. I understand that the United States does not agree with the actions taken by the Venezuelan government, but these sanctions with force Venezuela to be on the wrong side. Russia believes that the sanctions placed on Venezuela are illegal and that is the reason why Russia is aiding Venezuela. The long standing tensions between the US and Russia are also a reason that Russia wants to back Venezuela, in order to counter the United States. I believe that the whole ordeal is due to the fact that the United States wants control in their hemisphere. Not being able to control Venezuela threatens their influence in the Americas, therefore the sanctions are in place to gain a stronger foothold. However, Venezuela is able to work around these sanctions. The Venezuelan oil companies are sending invoices to the Russians and the Russians pay at a discount sale price. They eventually pay full price at a later time. I also think that it is interesting that both Russia and Venezuela are asking other oil companies to participate in the scheme. Under Putin, Russia has become heavily invested in Venezuela and therefore theses circumstances are only going to worsen their relationship with the United States. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
The United States recently put oil sanctions on Venezuela in order to protest the current presidential situation within that country.
