Many of my classmates are more comfortable with simulations after previously doing Model UN or something similar. I did not do much speaking in front of the class throughout the simulation, so I tried to participate during our smaller negotiations. I worked closely (as a member of ARM) with UNHCR to accomplish our goals. I also helped ARM write our amendments to the resolution. Since I’ve never done this before, I didn’t feel prepared to speak in front of the class; I’m unfamiliar with some of the Model UN aspects of the simulation, such as how to address the other groups. I felt more prepared to do things behind the scenes, since the topic related to our conflict unit. Also, I was sick for one of the classes and missed most of the resolution being written. Still, I wish I talked in front of the class, since I had ideas I wanted to put forward. I think our group accomplished what we wanted during the simulation- with the last amendment, we were able to become more closely involved in resolving the refugee crisis. However, I think that a more specific amendment improving refugee camp conditions would have been ideal for ARM. I liked working together with the other delegations, such as UNHCR and Gilbia, to get the outcome we wanted in our resolution. It was also very exciting when all the delegations (except Budan, of course) approved the resolution. I struggled the most with speaking in front of the class since I have never done Model UN and simulations are not really my thing. I think if we were to change anything, it would be to just get a little more background on how Model UN works, since I felt a little lost during the big group negotiations. I learned about how Model UN works, but more importantly about how IGOs, NGOs, and states all have to work together to make impactful changes in the world. I thought it was really cool to see all the different groups work collectively, while within our own interest. It was like seeing everything we learned this year come together! <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
This was my first time (other than the guns & butter) doing a simulation!
