Vaccine trials in Brazil come to a halt after an ‘adverse’ incident occurs leaving the situation more controversial than ever before. Brazil\u2019s health regulator had suspended trials of an experimental COVID-19 vaccine after an incident involving one of the volunteers. The setback for “CoronaVac” came on the same day US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer said its vaccine candidate had shown 90% effectiveness raising questions about the near end of this pandemic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Brazilian regulator decided to pause the clinical study because of an incident with the vaccine but did not state where the event took place or what happened, due to privacy rules. Suspicions rise with the conspiracies of death, potentially fatal side effects, serious disability, hospitalization, birth defects because these all usually indicate suspension of trials. The halt of the vaccine trial has been stated to paused because of a death, although, it has been confirmed the death was not caused by COVID or the vaccine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A political battle in Brazil has uproared due to the new testing of CoronaVac where Sao Paulo Governor Joao Doria, one of the strongest opponents of Jair Bolsonaro, the country\u2019s right-wing president, has supported this new vaccine. President Bolsonaro has dismissed the Sinovac vaccine candidate as lacking credibility. The preident has gone to extremes to claim that the Brazillian people will \u201cnot be anyone\u2019s guinea pig,\u201d and referring to the drug as \u201cJoao Doria\u2019s Chinese vaccine\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the president so opposed to this new vaccine it makes the carry out very hard. His influence is tremendous and anything he does or does not endorse can have either an extremely negative or positive effect. This could really affect the lives of the Brazilian people and whether or not they are closer to finding a vaccine. It can be dangerous based on the way the president addresses or reacts to this new CoronaVac. For example, last month, he immediately vetoed a plan created by his own health minister to buy 46 million doses of CoronaVac because of his opinion on this possible solution.
