An employee at the store called security saying the man, Joao Alberto Silveira Freitas, threatened to attack her, and the security guards then beat the man to death. After images and videos of the murder circled the news and social media, protests broke out at Carrefours throughout the area. Carrefour has come forward saying they will take actions to punish those involved, and will stop working with the security firm involved in the incident. They have additionally fired the manager at the store and will close the Carrefour where the incident took place in order to honor Freitas’ memory. However, protesters are still angry at the blatant racism by the security team, and the demonstrations have turned violent as protesters smash windows and police fire tear gas into crowds.

While many Americans focus only on racism within the United States, this article shows how important it is to look at the rest of the world in the same light. Slavery has had a large influence in Brazil, and although it was abolished in 1888, it’s presence still lingers. However, I thought the actions taken by Carrefour were commendable, although nothing can make up for the life lost. Often in America we see similar acts of racism, such as the murder of Breonna Taylor, where the officers involved still have yet to be charged. This is a recurring theme in our country, where those who commit blatant acts of racism are protected and receive minimal punishment, if any. It was interesting to see that although racism is still a large issue in Brazil, those in the position to respond did so correctly instead of ignoring the issue. However, President Jair Bolsonaro continues to denies racism in his country, which is shameful.

This can be related to what we’ve discussed in class through analyzing the conflict at both an individual and state level. When analyzing this conflict through an individual viewpoint, the cause is clearly pinpointed to the security guards who murdered Freitas. However, when branching out to look at this issue from a domestic level, you can pinpoint the cause back to deep rooted racism in Brazil. It becomes more of a cultural problem, where ideas have been passed down through generations. Acts of racism like this take place throughout the country, and this isn’t a one-time event; it has happened before and it will happen again.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-brazil-supermarket-death/violence-erupts-in-brazil-after-black-man-beaten-to-death-at-carrefour-store-idUSKBN2802V3 In Porto Alegre, Brazil, a Black man was beaten to death by security guards at a Carrefour Brasil supermarket, sparking outrage amongst people in the country.
