Noranda’s plan is currently pending due to an environmental impact assessment (EIA) done within the boundaries of the cockpit Country Protected Area (CCPA), which is put in place to protect renewable resources. However, Jamaica had already faced deforestation, which has put a toll on Jamaica’s environment.

There are both pros and cons associated with the mining. If Noranda’s plan were to pass, it would help Jamaica’s economy exponentially, and also create jobs. “The volume of bauxite exports from the initiative is expected to rake in excess of US$150 million (J$20.25 billion) per year in profit, the assessors said of the undertaking by Noranda, of which the Government of Jamaica has a 51 per cent stake.” This plan offers a lot of benefits, especially for Jamaica’s economy, but also several downsides. The negatives, if they do mine would result in an increase in water run off, erosion, could result in drainage systems flooding because of the large amount of sediments, damage to sinkholes, damage to caves, and reduction of water quality. In addition to all that this causes noise pollution, wildlife migration, and potential loss of biodiversity. I believe that they should still allow mining, but only in certain low-risks areas. By allowing this, it will boost Jamaica’s economy and give them a product to trade with other countries.

The bauxite mining issue in Jamaica represents a domestic/state level issue because of it primarily involves the government of Jamaica. I also believe this issue is so complex and has so many potential outcomes it might be helpful for the Jamaican government to use the steps of critical analysis.

Article link: http://jamaica-gleaner.com/article/lead-stories/20201118/green-light-bauxite-mining-cockpit-country In Jamaica, there has been raising concern over whether the company Noranda should mine bauxite (the primary source of aluminum) in the Cockpit Country, which is at the northern tip of Jamaica.
