It claims that women are 27 times more likely to be harassed, bullied, hacked, and shut down online then men in Latin America. The article talks about the significant increase in hacking, cyber stalking, porn revenge, and having personal information released online in an attempt to “shut women up”. The article also states that you are most at risk if you fall between the ages of 18-24 and of that 60% are targeted by men who have been considered predators. Not many sites regulate or monitor this gender violence. Over 20 women female rights defenders have come forward in a court of law to fight this.

This is important for a few different reasons. Just from an ethical standpoint- this is an issue. Why is the world still dealing with these issues in 2020? People will always get hacked and someone will always be a cyber bully- but this is an issue because it is so targeted. Predators are hacking into computers and devices and recording women and then holding those photos or videos over them, or anonymously releasing them online for just expressing their views or opinions. Because this is so poorly monitored in Latin America, it keeps happening- and it gives incentive for people to keep doing it because they don’t get caught for it. The second, and in my opinion biggest issue here, is tat this gives an outlet for more human trafficking- a worldwide issue. As previously stated the article claims you are most at risk as a young women, and of the men doing this over the majority of them are known predators- this is allowing for the community of captures and traffickers to find more women, especially if sexual photos of them are released.

The over lapping of this in International Relations is the discrimination, loss of perspective, and the potential addition to a global issue. Roughly 15,000-30,000 women are trafficked from Latin America each year, this issue could be contributing to the overall issue of human trafficking. If the world acknowledged this problem in all of their home countries- the trafficking ratio could be limited. Silencing women isn’t something that is uncommon- but something that should change, while the rest of the world could be losing the perspective from extremely great minds. This should be acknowledged by the government, and media sites should take more safety precautions to help these women- and be held accountable for them. Men who are known predators should be removed from the interest, flagged for review, and questioned.

https://iwpr.net/global-voices/iwpr-fights-gender-violence-online This article touches on the threats and increase in gender violence online towards Latin American women.
