The US Vice President, Kamala Harris, announced that as a part of her plan to decrease the amount of migrant children arriving at the border, she will be visiting Mexico and Guatemala.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harris hopes to use diplomacy with these countries as her main course of action to slow migration numbers from these countries. The previous US president, Donald Trump, implemented a very strict immigration policy. The Biden administration plans to replace these harsh policies with more diplomatic solutions. Harris spoke with regional experts last Wednesday to gain insight on possible strategies. The experts present included a national security advisor, a co-director of a migration nonprofit, and the president of the Migration Policy Institute.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Guatemalan president, Alejandro Giammattei, announced on Wednesday that he is optimistic that his government will be able to come to an agreement with Harris and her team. He also noted, though, that there are no present deals being discussed. No meeting date has been set.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than focus on the effects, Harris wants to fight illegal immigration at the source. One part of her plan is to bring economic development to the Northern Triangle, a region that currently has high emigration rates. The theory is that if less people need to leave their hometown, there will be less people trying to enter the United States.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The topic of immigration has long been a source of contention when it comes to US politics. Some Americans fear that immigrants will take economic opportunities from them or cause problems in other ways. In the past, American officials have focused on preventing illegal immigration at the border.
