While the tax bill has since been canceled, the protests are still raging. People claim these are now protests that “have become a broad call for improvements to Colombia’s pension, health and education systems, as well as against what demonstrators say is excessive use of violence by the security forces.” The most violent protests are seen in the city of Cali, which is considered to be the country’s most dangerous city due to their location in a region that has long been affected by conflict and high levels of gangs and drug traffickers. 24 people have died since the protests started. Additionally, more than 800 people are reported to be injured, and 80 classified as missing.

This is a major event that has been unfolding for over a week and a half. It does not seem like it is coming to a close anytime soon. The UN has mentioned that they are “extremely disappointed” in the violence they have seen. This article is important because it highlights what is going on in Colombia and could potentially call on others to help dismantle the massive amounts of violence. I believe that with this much protesting it is likely that the government will try and meet their demands, potentially affecting the region.

Protest and violence are signs seen when a country is undergoing a domestic conflict. The people are not happy with governmental policies and wish for reformation. The government is fighting back against these demands, but if it continues any longer it seems to be impossible for them to ignore it any longer. Colombia could be classified as their regions “leader”, which means that it is unlikely for their neighbors to become involved.

Article Link After a proposal of a tax raise bill in Colombia, citizens have taken to violent protests in the streets.
