Up until this pact, China and Australia had been improving their relations, especially in trade as China has grown to be one of Australia’s most integral trade partners. This has created tension over the threat of suspected Chinese ambitions to expand in power throughout the region, particularly in military power. To establish this accord, all three countries agreed to share their defense technologies, meaning thanks to Britain’s and the United States’ contributions, Australia will now have the ability to build nuclear-powered submarines for the first time in history. The implications of this development mean a shift in power away from China in the Indo-Pacific at the cost of worsened relations with France for both the United States and Australia as this intrudes on a similar deal from 2016 between France’s Naval Group and Australia which is now set to be called off. France feels that it has been blindsided by the US, the sentiment exacerbated by the fact that France had not been made aware of AUKUS throughout the entire process of its negotiation, a betrayal of trust in the eyes of the French.

To me, this news seems an important step for the US into the affairs of the Indo-Pacific, hitting close to home for China, geologically speaking. I also wonder how this might affect the burgeoning relationship between the United States and India, whether India might feel threatened by Australian nuclear submarines in its vicinity or India might see a gateway into better relations with Australia as an added benefit in striking an alliance with the United States as this can be seen as the strongest ties between the United States and Australia. Australia even went so far as to call the United States its “Forever Partner” while in the past the United States and Australia have been mostly connected through shared stances on world view and democracy as well as their affiliation with Britain, a primary ally of both countries. However, I disagree with how France was treated in this arrangement as France may be less forthcoming with the US in the future.

In an international relations perspective, I feel that bringing Australia closer in military power to the US and Britain is a strategic move. This is because Australia is stable and a very unique country in its geographical placement in the world as it and New Zealand can be seen as the longest-standing key staples of democracy in the South Pacific. Both these countries have been leaders in the progress of democratic institutions throughout history, with New Zealand being the first country to allow women to vote and Australia having one of the oldest democratic constitutions in the world. Building up Australia’s power now could prove to spread more democratic influence in the world’s future through giving Australia a more impactful military role and therefore greater opportunity to act in foreign affairs.

Link to Article : https://www.voanews.com/a/australia-signs-new-defense-accord-with-us-and-britain-/6230912.html On Thursday September 15, the Indo-Pacific region entered into a new stage of its power balance with the announcement of a new alliance between the United States, Australia, and Great Britain, with the acronym AUKUS.
