This was due to the fact that immigrants and asylum seekers would be forced to wait in Mexico while border organizations worked to let them in. Dismantling this system brought about unforeseen downsides. Many people viewed this as an opportunity to enter the US and the border was quickly flooded with a new wave of immigrants. In response Texas and Missouri sued the Biden administration for this change stating that it “imposed severe and ongoing burdens”. Eventually this matter was brought to the supreme court, the supreme court ruled that the trump era policies will stay in place for the time being. This provides a mixed message for asylum seekers because they were told that the borders were open however on arriving they found they were still closed. Now we have seen thousands of asylum seekers just waiting at the border for news and clarity on what will happen to them.
In the case of Marilin Lopéz this news was deeply troubling. She had fled her home in fear of violence being brought upon her and her family, after arriving at the border they were told they were going to have to wait for their court date. She missed her court date after seeing one of the people who she said was threatening violence on her and her family. The issue presented is that the US only grants asylum to 2% of applicants under the system put into place by the Trump administration most of the reason is due to them not appearing in court for their assigned date. After the Bidens position was one of trouble because in campaigning and in office they had strongly positioned themselves as creating an open border however upon doing so they had created various problems highlighted most clearly in the lawsuit from Texas and Mississippi. The Biden administration was on the verge of falling back into trump administration policies anyways however because of the supreme court ruling they were saved the embarrassment of backstepping publicly.
In relevance to our class this change in immigration policies for the foreseeable future further complicates the issue of asylum seekers from Mexico and causes the US government to seem unfocused and unable in some regards to solve the issue at hand. This only serves to further weaken the way the USA is viewed in other countries in the Americas. While the Mexican government has agreed that a solution is necessary they also have been uncooperative in searching for a solution to this issue. The issue of imigration has been and will continue to be an issue for the foreseeable future especially with the added issue of the global pandemic currently ravaging Mexico and potential covid carriers wanting to enter the US. The Biden administration has said they are looking into a solution currently, but for now refugees will have to wait and continue to use the Trump era immigration system.

Link to article; https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/06/world/americas/mexico-migrants-asylum-border.html In the beginning of President Biden’s term the Biden administration sought to dismantle the immigration system that was put into place under the Trump administration because they had deemed it “inhumane”.
