For Wales, it’s come to light that their imports are causing large amounts of destruction to not only the Amazon rain-forest but parts of the Amazon inhabited by Native peoples and tribes. Wales seems to import a large amount of soy from Brazil, as well as goods such as palm oil and beef. Rivelino Vera Gabriel, a native chief who’s tribe has been affected by the forest’s debilitation, implores Wales to consider where their goods come from, as well as to inform their people as to where their goods are sourced from as well. As the Brexit trade deals are negotiated, there are pleas to include environmental standards in their plans. Wales has been an environmentally conscious country for a long time, but now it seems their next step is to become environmentally conscious even overseas. If implemented, this change to Wale’s trade policy could effect countries such as Peru and Brazil both negatively and positively, as well as indirectly affecting the rest of the world. As already 20% of the Amazon rainforest is gone, losing even 5% more could keep the forest from ever bouncing back. Meaning the countries that thrive off them can’t bounce back either.

In my opinion, mostly good can come out of restricting what is exported out of Brazil and Peru and into other countries. Although the argument could be made that it will negatively impact South American trade and profit, I think the long term affects will be more positive. Of the resources exported from South America into Wales, Palm oil and Soy are goods that particularly benefit private cooperation’s. Often, these goods are illegally sourced in the rush to make a profit. By tracing the origin of their imports, Wales will not only help take down these illegal operations, but also benefit ethically sourced palm oil and soy. This helps Peru and Brazil, but also the rest of the world. The Amazon is largely responsible for purifying the air we breath. The more it is deforested, the thicker the Ozone layer becomes, having a negative effect on countries who aren’t largely involved in palm oil or soy trade. The article itself is a good beacon for Native voices. As their homes and way of life are destroyed, I think it’s important that we bring to light how our actions and purchases affect literal humans. If we can protect thousands of species and a group of our own humans, in my opinion it’s worth the sacrifice of less palm oil and soy.

Under realist theory, it’s a little harder to understand why Wales would make an effort to restrict these imports. It can most clearly be defined under the motivation of human rights. Perhaps if these actions did not directly impact a group of indigenous peoples, Wales would be less inclined to pause their imports. But more than this, I think Wales is one of a few countries that makes an effort to neutralize itself in world issues. It keeps them out of conflict and diminishes them as a target, and in the future they will be seen as more of an ally than a threat.

link to article: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-59199514 As climate awareness rises globally, countries are already noticing their actions have a devastating effect on places they didn’t even consider.
