Originally, FARC was a group of people that banded together in 1964 against the Colombian government after a series of unfair governance in the people’s eyes (hence FARC’s alternative title as the People’s Army). Over the years, they were identified as a terrorist group due to their repeated bombings, kidnappings, and assassinations. They fought to redistribute wealth to the people, and after 5 decades they agreed to peace. In the peace agreement, which took place in 2016, it was laid out that the group would surrender their weapons in favor of moving towards the status of a political group instead. Since 2016, 13,000 guerrillas have turned in said weapons. Now, as FARC has gained seats (as a political party) in Colombia’s house, the US would like to work with them again. To do this it is important that Biden lifts that designation as a foreign terrorist, as obviously it would look bad to cooperate with a terrorist organization. To prevent further violence in Colombia and progress them as a country, it is crucial that they begin integrating themselves into the world again.

I think that for a long time Colombia has established themselves as not so much a 3rd world country but more a country that has the potential to be a major trade partner but is hindered by it’s economic/governmental welfare. Obviously, it still has high levels of crime in its cities and the recent protests from Colombian women over issues of sexism and rape, all of which helps bring down their reputation. Working with the US in political and economic matters could really improve the overall reputation and welfare of the country. It also feels like the United States is making a strong effort to help westernize Colombia, given that Colombia has recently become a more democratic country (all though this could also fall under a general sense of globalization). It could be possible in my opinion that the US may need Colombia in the future for it’s natural resources as well given it’s location at the top of South America. All of these factor into the US’s future need for Colombia, hence the effort to solidify positive relations with FARC as they hold seats in Columbia’s house.

Like I mentioned earlier, Colombia is on a trend of globalization. These recent changes in relation to FARC are indicative of many globalization trends. Colombia is expanding it’s trade, and currently trades most heavily with the US, China, Germany, and the Netherlands, as well as it’s neighboring countries. From 2014 to 2019, their percentage of people with access to internet increased around 15%, showing enhanced telecommunications. Colombia also hosts many Venezuelan refugees and migrants, and their migrant influx has risen significantly. All of these things indicate that FARC’s peace efforts, and recent cooperation with the US, are a positive change for Colombia.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/11/30/us-lifts-colombias-farc-foreign-terrorist-designation The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, is officially no longer a ‘foreign terrorist’ in the United State’s eyes.
