The sum of troops seems to be around 92,000, as well as drones and electronic warfare. NATO already has troops stationed in Ukraine, as this isn’t the first time this year that Moscow has gathered on the border like this, but the last gathering ended with no conflict. As such, Russia has advised NATO not to place more troops in the country. Putin has strongly hinted that this would anger him greatly, and then he strongly hinted at a new hyper-sonic missile. It is unclear if these weapons and troops are a serious threat or a show of dominance and bargaining towards United States president Joe Biden. The United States, however, seems to be leading the charge with NATO in forcing Moscow’s retreat. The Secretary of State is expected to debrief the other 29 NATO countries on how exactly they want to handle this situation. He also stated that if Moscow were to retaliate in a hostile or violent manner, there would be ‘serious consequences’.

This is a prime example of a situation that can only escalate with time. When one country uses a weapon to keep themselves safe, and the other country creates a bigger weapon to keep themselves safe, they can only go back and forth (until one country backs down or this bravado is put to the test). This is really a stalemate where nobody wins. As long as Moscow keeps placing troops at the border, NATO will (most likely) retaliate with troops. I don’t see a change in this pattern happening especially as it has been taking place since 2014. This conflict was originally incited by Russian annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, and it’s been thought to be an effort by Russia to possibly gain more land.

NATO is an IGO, which means it works with governmental organizations from around the world in efforts of cooperation. Although there are 29 NATO participant countries besides the United States, Russia is not one of them. However, they used to be. Russia left NATO in 2014, after an initial conflict with Ukraine left them feeling on the outs. Even with Russia no longer a part of NATO, however, it will be difficult for NATO to decide how to proceed with Russia and Ukraine situation. NATO acts on a consensus based discussion, not a vote. Agreement is crucial to the cooperation of the countries to take action. With the US spearheading this NATO charge, it may be easier for a consensus to be reached.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/11/30/nato-foreign-ministers-to-meet-amid-renewed-russia-tensions It seems that Moscow and Ukraine are on the verge of, well, something, as Moscow gathers troops and weapons on the border between the two countries.
