The Mexican interior ministry reported that there was a “substantial increase” in Venezuelans coming into Mexico to reach the United States, along with false motives declared for entering the country. At the moment, Venezuelans do not need a visa to enter Mexico as tourists. Many Venezuelans are migrating due to the severe economic issues their country faces. There has been a 1000+% increase in irregular transit to a third country when compared to the same period in the past five years. This visa requirement is similar to a previous move that Mexico instated on Brazilians, as well as the 6-month suspension of visa exemptions for Ecuadorians that Mexico put in place in September in response to a rise in Ecuadorians heading for the US border.

This is important because it shows Mexico taking stances that benefit the US’s national interest. This implies that Mexico is willing to forego its own national interest to receive favor from the US due to the US’s status and power. Also, the substantial rise in Venezuelan immigration to the US due to their economy should be watched carefully since this is likely to be followed by a large migration back to Venezuela in the future should it stabilize, which could possibly hurt the US’s population and in turn its economy. Therefore, it makes sense to attempt to manage a steady influx of immigrants to keep the after-effects controlled as well as allowing the infrastructure near the border to handle tolerable amounts of new arrivals.

This situation falls into the category of International Security since Mexico is trying to help the US curb large border breaches. States such as Mexico, the US, and Venezuela are involved. The unipolar system of the world is evident here due to Mexico submitting to US national interest in hopes that they will continue benefiting from their relationship with the US. However, this still relates to the liberal principle of reciprocity since Mexico is assisting the US with immigration problems in an attempt to gain other benefits in return. In a sense, this reminds me of offshore balancing by the US shelling out its immigration problems onto other regional countries instead of continuing to build a wall as Trump planned to. This relates to the problem of democracy and national interest; before the Biden administration a wall was being built, now, that plan has been scrapped for a new one.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/mexico-impose-visa-requirements-venezuelans-2021-12-17/ Mexico is going to put in place visa requirements for Venezuelans in hopes that it will help curb the extreme levels of illegal immigration to the United States.
