The inauguration will take place on January 27th and Castro will be the first female president in South America. Lai is hoping to strengthen ties between the two countries due to the increasing pressure and threat of invasion from the Chinese government. Honduras is one of only 14 nations to have formal ties with Taiwan. On this trip to Honduras Lai hopes to meet with the United States Vice President Kamala Harris and strengthen ties with the United States.

This is important because for one this is the first time that there has been a female president in a South American country, but also because of the importance of Chinese pressure on Taiwan. For a while China has been ramping up pressure on Taiwan and threatening to invade them. With Taiwan making specific plans to try to make sure they have support if China invades shows that they are scared that Chinese invasion could be close in the future. This would also bring down what the United States has been doing for a long time of having allies surrounding China in the South China Sea.

This relates back to the class because we have talked about the relationship and threat of China invading Taiwan for a long time. China is threatening to invade Taiwan because China believes Taiwan is supposed to be a part of China, and also that it is an ally to the United States and it ristrics China’s access to the South China Sea. With China taking over Taiwan it would mean that they would give China better trade routes through the South China Sea, this isn’t good for the United States with China already expanding their influence in east Africa and the Indian Ocean.

Article: https://www.reuters.com/business/media-telecom/taiwan-shore-up-honduras-ties-vp-attend-inauguration-2022-01-19/ On January 19th, 2022 Taiwan Vice President William Lai said that he would be in attendance at the inauguration of the new Honduran president Xiomara Castro.
