And the possibility of President Biden banning all US imports of Russian oil (which happened on March 8 the day after this article was written) , the pressure for US diplomats to scramble to try to find energy sources globally to replace Russian oil. They are now calling for Venezuela to supply a portion of oil to the US as Venezuela is an OPEC member state, but the US has had sanctions on Venezuelan oil since 2019 making this agreement difficult to achieve. US Sanctions on PDVSA, the Venezuelan state-owned oil and gas company, where put in place to pressure President Maduro to resign and to combat human rights violations, leaving Chevron the last US oil producer operations in the country, but barred from shipping Venezuelan oil from there and maintaining a low presence just to ensure safety of operations. The US stated that the only reason for the possible lifting would be to gain supplies for the US and it would be conditional on Venezuela’s direct shipping of oil to the US. Talks were held this past weekend to begin negotiations and although little progress was made, the parties agreed to further talks. Venezuela and Russia have been allied for a long time so the US aims to start pulling Maduro away from his alliance with Putin. The US called for free presidential elections and the release of Americans jailed in Venezuela, while Maduro called for the lifting of sanctions.

With oil prices rising another 5% on Tuesday, and no foreseeable end to the Russia-Ukraine war, it’s crucial that US officials find means of energy in the near future. Russia accounted for 670,000 barrels per day in 2021 and Venezuela’s oil production last year averaged 636,000 barrels per day. Venezuela could be an answer to the crisis, as prices will continue to rise and the US will continue to hold strong sanctions on Russia. This could also be a crucial moment in foreign relations as the US could break the alliance of Russia and Venezuela and facilitate better living conditions in Venezuela. In addition, the major corporation Chevron, could recover production in Venezuela and resume exports to refineries in the US, effectively replacing the Russian barrels that were before shipped here.

The relationship between Venezuela and Russia has proven to be harmful to the United States as they cooperate in areas of concern to the United States like oil exportation and policy and the US has had no formal relationship with Venezuela since 2019 due to Venezuelan president Guaido and officially recognizing him as an interim president. OPEC is an intergovernmental organization of petroleum exporting countries that comprises 15 different countries including Venezuela. The US wants to import Venezuelan oil, however as a global power it must be conditional because if the US trades with Venezuela then in some way they are accepting the human rights violations in the country. It’s crucial that the United States uphold moral values around the world for the people of oppressive countries.

Link to article: https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-vladimir-putin-business-europe-venezuela-cbe04e87fca44ed3815aba8dd2b65945 The mass economic sanctions that halted the Russian economy, one of the largest oil producers in the world, left the United States lacking supply of imported oil and consequently driving prices up.
