This deal will widen a swap agreement signed last year by the US sanctioned countries. The two nations last year initially agreed to this swap deal with PDVSA, a Venezuelan state-run oil company, importing Iranian condensate to dilute and process its extra heavy oil for export. Iran in return would ship Venezuelan crude oil via the National Iranian Oil Company. As a part of this deal Venezuela has received Iranian equipment to revamp its refineries. Iran’s Oil Minister Javad Owji traveled to Venezuela to meet with President Nicolas Maduro and discuss trade agreements. A large trade was agreed upon thus furthering the relationship between these two countries.

Analysis: Venezuela and Iran are both countries that the US is not on amazing terms with at the moment. Both being sanctioned by the US thus limiting their export and earnings potential. The fact that they are now working so closely together could be worrying to the US as there alliance could lead to bigger issues further into the future. As of right now they are working together in order to most efficiently produce oil in order to export it as right now the world is in need of more oil because of the Ukraine-Russia conflict. And if Venezuela can capitalize on this time it could do wonders for there unstable economy. There has also been a push in recent weeks of easing the US sanctions on Venezuela. This could be a huge step of Venezuela to start rebuilding itself and pull its economy up.

How this relates to class: This shows us how allies work together in regards of trade. Both Iran and Venezuela were under US sanction which limits you greatly and because of this they needed to look for ways to be able to make the most of what they have. They did this by looking to one another and coming to an agreement which benefits both of them greatly. This trade agreement could mean a very steady alliance in the future for these countries.

link to article http://Venezuela begins imports of Iranian heavy oil for refining -PDVSA documents Summary: Venezuela has begun importing Iranian crude oil to refine in its own refineries.
