Starting on September 26, both nations will allow cargo transport and commercial flights to cross between the borders that currently only allow pedestrian usage. Petro, elected into office in August, is working towards building back the relationship between the two nations after his predecessor refused to recognize Venezuela’s Maduro as its leader. After the closing of the border by Maduro in 2015 due to an anti-smuggling act and break between ports in 2019, the new opening will increase revenue for both countries, estimated at around 1.2 billion dollars compared to the 406 million of last year.

The impact of this new relationship between the nations will not only strengthen the economy for both, but also establish mutual connection and cooperation between the people. They already share deep cultural ties (since once being a part of the same nation in the 19th century), so being in each other’s good graces as separate nations I believe will help them move forward together as individuals. Both nations have already expressed their willingness to do what is best for their people and gladly welcomed the other into their quarters of association. Therefore, the step in cross-connection activity again and diplomatic relations will open a new chapter after a past of political conflict.

This relates back to what we’ve briefly discussed in class because it covers the idea of recognition between countries and their leaders. Also by recognition of a state, that establishes international legitimacy and the state’s strength which is important to consider.

Link to Article After years of tension, President Gustavo Petro of Columbia and President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela have agreed to reopen their shared border.
