They protested at the capital , wanting to be heard. The president has been under much controversy since 2021 after he adopted bitcoin as a legal tender, and people are questioining his abilities to run the country. The people of El Salavador are failing to trust him to smoothly run the government, therefore are protesting his plan to re-elect in 2024. The law in El Salvador is that a president is to serve a 5 year term, then can re-elect for another 5 years. He also wants to change this, but people of the Nueves Ideas party have concluded that it is “unconstitutional” for him to serve a single day after his term.

In my opinion, El Salvador is a country with many hardships, which requires a strong president that can endure and fix them to the best of their ability. All presidents are scrutinized by at least a small group, but many residents of El Salavdor are getting tired of Bukele’s consistent fail to serve their country in an efficient way. However, from my point of view looking in, it seems like he is able to upkeep with these hardships. Disregarding the recent protests, about 68% of Salvadorians support his re-election. His 5 year term is coming to an end, but he has made a decent impact so far, such as reducing the tax burden in El Salvador. He is also bulding relations with India by making plans for India’s development coorperation with El Salvador.

This situation relates to our class because our presidential elections are something that we discuss for years after they happen, and they impact us greatly. But we dont really consdier how elections in other countries affect them and the vast changes that certain leaders propose. Its also not commonly discussed the policies in place that other countries have for their leaders regarding their term length, etc.

Link to article: https://latinamericanpost.com/45300-el-salvador-presidential-elections-2024-how-possible-is-bukeles-re-election Thousands of Salvadorians are worried for the future of their country if it continues to be run under President Nayib Bukele.
