Until recently, El Salvador was known as the “death capital” due to having the highest rate of violence on Earth; at a recorded 6,656 homicides. The amount of homicides since the new policies were put in place has shrunk considerably to “146 homicides through Sept. 18, more than 72% below the same period last year,” according to the National Civil Police. Their solution isn’t perfect though, as Bukele suspended critical parts of due process during the mass detainment. This included knowing the reason for their arrest and having access to a lawyer. As a result, thousands of innocents have been caught in the crossfire, human rights have been violated, and dozens have died while in custody. In response to this, Bukele said “Salvadorans can walk without fear in their neighborhoods and allow their children to play outside without the oppressive fear of gang recruitment and violence.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n This situation is very conflicting, as a crackdown on the violence has been well overdue. But the methods in which they have gone about it are questionable at best. Violating human rights in order to resolve the violence issue “in record time” according to Bukele is wrong and unjustifiable. A crackdown of this volume should be executed with more care than what has been taken, not be rushed in order to get it done in “record time.” The unlawful arrest of thousands of innocents is not trivial by any means. Though the rate of homicides has decreased greatly, the costs in which it got there are not to be ignored. This policy continuing to remain as it is is likely, due to the perceived success of the crackdown. The influx of tourists and Salvadorans who left due to the violent conditions will also contribute to this. El Salvador has also been criticized internationally for their methods, so this will likely impact their relations with other states. <\/p>\n\n\n\n This article directly relates back to our vocab, as though there has concerns expressed for the internal affairs of El Salvador, none have stepped in due to having to respect El Salvador’s sovereignty. The general assembly that Bukele spoke at is El Salvador engaging in foreign policy, and unless a state wants to start a war, they cannot get involved beyond criticizing Bukele and his decisions regarding the crackdown.
