In the past both presidents have criticized each other’s attempts at approaching these growing issues, so tensions have been high with López Obrador even not showing up to the convention last year. This year was surprisingly positive towards the two leaders both complementing each other. López Obrador specifically complimented Biden’s approach to issues at the border saying it was being approached in a “humane way.” Both pledged to work together to solve the deadly issue fentanyl poses.

Analysis: Due to the location of Mexico and America Bordering each other the ability to work together on issues that impact both of the countries is critical to the survival of both the countries. While there have been lots of tensions in the past with these two countries, the approach that they are currently taking is likely the most effective approach to these issues. Since they are working together in a positive light they can attack the problems from both ends and hopefully gain control of the situations. Seeing these growing diplomatic ties is positive not only for the relationship of these countries but also keeps America at a very low possibility of having an attack on their soil which is an important part of our foreign policy.

Connection to Class: In class, we have talked about America’s foreign policy focusing on protecting its soil. This connection with Mexico is a prime example of America protecting its peace and using diplomatic actions with its neighboring countries. It not only protects their peace but also the free trading relation they hold with Mexico. This relationship is a huge reason that Mexico and America have stayed peaceful because they don’t want to disrupt the systems in place. This is aligned with a sub-theory of liberalism more specifically Commercial Peace theory, the idea that countries find peace within trade because they do not want to disrupt the systems.

Link: https://apnews.com/article/biden-immigration-migrants-mexico-fentanyl-d39861ee91b91656be23e8d1068ec993 Summary: US President Joe Biden met with Mexican President Manuel López Obrador at the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperative Summit to discuss matters that dealt with illicit fentanyl trafficking along with confronting the growing migrant issue.
