His family pleads for his release as they say he was wrongfully arrested and held for tens of thousands of dollars in ransom. Very little is known About the arrest of this US citizen, but it is known no criminal charges have been pressed and he has not been allowed to see a lawyer. Wright joins at least 7 other arrested American citizens in Venezuela but he stands out due to the risky move that the Biden administration recently made by lifting the oil sanctions.

Analysis: America and Venezuela currently have high tensions not only due to the oil sanctions but also due to the unprecedented amount of immigrants that recently have been migrating to America. America knows about the risk when entering Venezuela and has repeatedly warned US citizens not to visit there due to the high possibility of kidnapping and extortion. If America and Venezuela keep having security issues and threats to their people there is a good chance oil sanctions could be replaced in Venezuela. If that were to happen there would be huge concerns for Venezuela and how their economic standpoint would be.

Connection to Class: If you look at this through the lens of a Constructivist you see that the issues that Venezuela has with America could be due to the identity they have of themselves compared to what America sees them as. Venezuela’s oil, while valuable, is not the only place we could get it from. So, we don’t see the importance of Venezuela as much as they do so they do acts to assert their dominance, the caturing of Wright being an example. It’s really important to Venezuela to have America and other Western countries buying their oil, it makes their economy thrive. When the sanction was on it, it was detrimental to their economy.

Link: https://apnews.com/article/venezuela-maduro-biden-oil-sanctions-arrests-743eb9bfd6ab3c62c41ce4099e221843 Summary: On October 24th, California Man Savoi Wright was reportedly arrested in Venezuela days after crippling oil sanctions on the socialist-run government were lifted by the Biden administration.
