Reed had also, in 2019, been convicted of assaulting a Russian law enforcement officer while intoxicated, which Reed denied, and was imprisoned with a 9 year sentence. In 2022, there was a prisoner exchange held between Russia and the UK and the U.S. where he was then released. The Russian Investigative Committee said on October 9 that Reed enlisted with Ukrainian forces in May 2023 and participated in combat operations in the Donetsk region. It became public in July of 2023 that Reed had been fighting for the Ukrainians when he was injured and had to be transferred to a German medical facility. Reed’s conviction comes just days after 2 other Americans were convicted and sentenced by Russian courts. This has led to concerns about Russian political motivation behind their detentions.

This is an important event because it has led to heightened tensions between Russia and the United States. The United States is currently going into a very divided election period and internal pressure is at an extreme high. Because of this, we are going to see the political party currently in office taking a very cautious approach on how they handle this situation as they will be competing to regain office in November. Russia is aggravated because American citizens are now involved in the conflict and it likely makes the Russian government anxious about the involvement of NATO.

I believe that this is going to develop an uproar from the citizens of America and Russians. Russians likely feel like they’re under the attack of the citizens of the United States. Russia is likely to hold onto this prisoner until there is something they require of/from the United States. U.S. citizens will likely be in favor of having Reed released seeing that he is fighting for a cause many Americans believe is right. The United States on the other hand, with the Ukrainian and Russian war that is currently underway, has to tread their water very cautiously as the U.S. has been trying to peacefully end this conflict without aggravating Russia/Putin.

This event relates to the “levels of analysis” that we’ve covered in class. On the global scale, Russia is feeling attacked by the U.S. citizens because of the former Marine that was fighting for Ukraine. On the interstate/regional scale, Russia was originally fearing Ukraine’s shift towards NATO and Europe; having the former United States serviceman fighting for Ukraine makes Russia feel like NATO is now on their doorstep. Russia is feeling very nervous because the conflict may seem as though it is now risking the involvement of the U.S. which is the domestic/state level. Lastly there’s the individual category; Putin detains this former Marine in absentia (Reed wasn’t present for conviction) and a couple other Americans. This is likely because Putin is already aggravated that the United States is funding and supporting the Ukrainian cause and this is a way to get the United States out of “his business”.

Link to Article: https://www.rferl.org/a/trevor-reed-marine-ukraine-trial-ansentia-russia-sentence/33152282.html Former U.S. Marine, Trever Reed, has been sentenced to prison for 14.5 years in absentia for joining and fighting directly for the Ukrainian army and charged with being a “mercenary”.
