Israel’s war against Gaza has started to spread across a wider area of the middle east, bringing in states such as Iran and Lebanon. Israel began missile strikes in Lebanon on September 23rd, claiming the targets were Hezbollah infrastructure and meeting points, however, civilians were given minimal warning to evacuate. Many civilians have been caught in the crossfire, and they remain in danger until the situation can be stabilized. Because many Lebanese have dual Canadian citizenship, Canada is sending special flights to Lebanon to give Lebanese-Canadians a chance to evacuate to safety in Canada. These flights have evacuated about 1,000-2,000 citizens so far, and this number will rise as the efforts continue. Canada has also been offering seats on these airplanes that they could not fill to citizens of Australia, New Zealand, the United States and some European countries, all countries Canada considers close allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Lebanese Civil War from 1975 to 1990, Canada was a popular destination for Lebanese refugees. After the war, many Lebanese-Canadians returned to Lebanon but retained their Canadian citizenship. The large amount of people with dual Lebanese-Canadian citizenship has created a strong diplomatic relationship between the two countries, leading Canada to invest money and resources in Lebanon’s security and stability over the years. In 2006, an estimated 50,000 Lebanese-Canadians were in Lebanon when a war broke out between Israel and Hezbollah. Canada made a major effort to evacuate Canadian citizens from Lebanon to prevent them from being caught in the crossfire, much like the efforts they are making today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called for a ceasefire from both Hezbollah and Israel to stabilise the situation. It would be ideal for Israel and Hezbollah to agree to a ceasefire in this situation, but at this point that seems unlikely to happen. The best thing for Canada to do in this situation would be continuing the evacuation and civilian assistance efforts as long as it is safe for them to do so. This is an admirable move on Canada’s part—the Canadian government’s commitment to the safety of their citizens, even those living abroad, will likely increase Canadian citizens’ trust in their government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canada’s decision to help its citizens evacuate from Lebanon is in their national interest because it is the government’s main purpose to ensure the safety of its citizens. Because many Canadian citizens live in Lebanon, Canada considers stability and security in Lebanon to be a priority. In addition, by allowing citizens of their allied countries to take advantage of these evacuation efforts as well, they strengthen important diplomatic relationships that will ensure their own security.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
