In the agreement, Argentina and El Salvador pledged to share intelligence in order to effectively combat larger criminal organizations and trafficking. The pact emphasizes a clear, no tolerance approach to crime and shows each country’s commitment to revitalizing their policies, law enforcement, and prisons in order to better address crime. The pact represents a push for greater interstate collaboration within Latin America in addressing crime — an issue that many countries in South America face.

As discussed in my other post, El Salvador’s president, President Bukele, is taking a no tolerance approach to crime in his country. And, despite criticisms from human rights advocates, his method has borne serious results and attracted the attention of other Latin American countries, namely Argentina. Argentina’s president, President Milei, is interesting in his own right. He, too, is taking drastic measures to resolve his country’s primary concern — in this case, the economy. Milei is making sweeping, experimental fiscal policy that, as of now, is helping to build up Argentina’s economy (though some economists are still dubious on whether these changes will be long lasting). Both these men are taking radical approaches towards their citizens’ main concerns — and though their methods are criticized, they are getting tangible results.

Crime is one of the major problems that show up in the headlines for South America. Many of these countries have issues with gangs and drug trafficking — some worse than others, sure, but it’s a common theme. This sort of interstate collaboration, then, is a great idea for these countries. Sharing intelligence on criminal operations will help to prevent criminals from relocating to different countries when they get caught. Going forward, the best move is to involve more Latin American countries in this initiative in order to effectively address the prevalence of crime in the continent. That is likely easier said than done, however.

This pact is a great example of overlapping national interests and how those shared interests allow for collaboration. Both Argentina and El Salvador have concerns about the prevalence of crime in their countries. Sharing intelligence and presenting a united front will allow them to better address this concern. Therefore, they are able to reach an agreement. I do wonder, however, how long this pact will last. Although at the moment there seem to be very few downsides, at some point in the future, one state may want more control over their own policies regarding crime.

Link to Article: https://latinamericanpost.com/americas/politics/argentina-and-el-salvador-unite-in-historic-anti-crime-pact/ Argentina and El Salvador signed an anti-crime pact, the “New Doctrine Against Organized Crime,” that outlines a shared commitment to combating crime and maintaining state sovereignty.
