More specifically, Peru as they are aligning themselves closely with China. Peru is the number two copper exporter and China has vast plans of creating a Chinese-made port in Peru for trading. This article focuses on China’s influence outweighing the US’s especially in Peru. China now has a trade surplus of 16.3 billion dollars and they are continuing to further trade relations. The article states, “China can’t start by building military bases there because it’s too sensitive”, but China is becoming very close partners with the US’s economic ties in South America. Unless the US intentionally seeks out a stronger partnership with Peru, China will continue to override the US. These new trade relations and ports for China are making the pathways to Asia significantly easier. The US has been very helpful and crucial to many countries in South America; but, these countries have remarked on how much more proactive and available China has been for them.

This article is very important because it shows the ever changing shifts that occur in international relations and global economic power dynamics in South America. As China dominates trade in much of South America, it has ramifications on the US and Peru. Because of China’s overpowering relationship with Peru, the US is left with a weakening relationship with South American allies in their “backyard”. As the US’s influence in Peru deflates, this could have huge effects on the US’s access to essential resources and trade in Peru. Peru could greatly expand economically because of the building of new Chinese infrastructure and ports to trade their resources. Although economic growth will likely occur in Peru, China’s influence and economic policy could overly influence Peru in an unfavorable way. The US could reassert itself in South America by increasing investments and creating beneficial, diplomatic relationships with Peru and other countries in South America. The US could also show Peru they are as intentional and accessible as China when creating new trade deals with Peru.

China’s use of soft power is very attractive to South American countries and relates back to the vocabulary we are learning in class. China’s tactics of constantly building infrastructure and investing in countries with limited building resources is a huge way China is winning over countries around the world. China is benefiting Peru while also benefiting itself from many well thought out soft power tactics. China has a long term goal with this strategy and they are using relationship building to execute their plans for the future.

Link to the Article: https://www.reuters.com/world/south-america-trump-already-losing-trade-battle-with-china-2024-11-11/ It is becoming extremely apparent that China has rapidly growing influence in almost all continents around the world and South America is one of them.
