The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau has congratulated Trump on the win but their past relationship has been very on and off with new conflicts on the rise. With a possible election occurring in Canada, the US and Canada’s relationship could shift even more and create new complications diplomatically. Canada is very reliant on the US for trade because 75% of its exports are shipped to the US. As Trump implements tariffs on imported goods and services, Canada’s already declining economy will become significantly weaker. There are also rising questions about the future of USMCA as analysts are urging Canada to remind Americans of what a good trade agreement it has been for them. Trump has also put increasing pressure on Canada who is currently committing to spending 1.29% of GDP on defense. US officials believe this is not an adequate amount, so Canada is looking for new ways to support defense by utilizing their rich supply of minerals. Finally, Trump’s immigration policies have concerned Canada when looking back to his first term and considering the great amount of asylum seekers that emerged. The US and Canada are still working out their border control system and how they will cooperate to secure the border.

This article is important because it shows the intricate relationship between the US and Canada as they navigate difficult issues like trade, borders and defence methods. Canada is one of the largest trade partners to the US, so increasing economic challenges in Canada could have lasting impacts in both Canada and the US. I think creating a stable and mutually beneficial trade relationship is the most effective way to stabilize Canada and the US’s complex relationship. Both countries rely on each other as allies in NATO so it is crucial for the US to have a northern neighbor with a strong defense system in place. Canada will be greatly impacted by tariffs imposed on them by the US and according to the article: “the Business Development Bank of Canada estimated the move could subtract $7bn from Canada’s GDP in the year it is implemented and drive down the Canadian dollar.” To combat the problematic and possible lasting impacts of Trump’s reelection, Canada could continue to converse with the US and present all the positives that are outcomes of having a mutually beneficial trade partnership. Canada could also show the US its very strong reliance on Canadian exports and negotiate for lower tariffs on goods. Canada should also show their support for implementing protocols for immigration and border controls.

When connecting this article back to class, I think this article is referring to a collective goods problem. Both countries are looking towards their own national interest first and it is hindering their ability to compromise to provide benefits for both countries. Both countries engaging in constant diplomatic discussions could greatly improve their relationship, as well as supporting both countries’ economic and social policies.

Link to the Article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ce31ngvlvd3o Following Donald Trump’s presidential election, Canada has concerns about border issues, trade and how to move forward peacefully with the United States.
