This action has implied that there could be stricter enforcement of oil sanctions on both Iran and Venezuela. However, rising concerns of retaliation by China could affect U.S. efforts. Rubio has been a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for quite some time has has heavily pushed for a tougher U.S. foreign policy on countries such as Iran and China. He is also a strong critic of Venezuela’s socialist president Nicolas Maduro, whose two re-elections have been questioned by the U.S. government and led to the oil sanctions on Venezuela placed by the U.S. During Trump’s first term, successive waves of sanctions heavily slowed Iran’s exports of oil. However, during Biden’s time in office, sanctions have been less enforced and Iran have been finding ways to get around the weak sanctions as China has become one of their major buyers. Rubio has his eyes set on implementing President-elect Trump’s plans and strategies to establish pressure on Iran’s exports, which are mostly aimed to China. The increase of U.S. effort towards these sanctions could upset China and cause them to retaliate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Starting in 2022, the Biden administration has issued licenses to some foreign partners as well as the customer of PDVSA (Venezuelan state oil company), allowing oil deliveries to the U.S., Europe, and India. This has resulted in oil exports in Venezuela to jump to almost a million barrels a day. It has been stated that the primary action on the list for the Trump administration is to strengthen oil sanctions and thoroughly review oil licenses allowing U.S. and foreign oil companies to do business with Venezuela. Due to the fact that no one person leads the implementation as well as enforcement of sanctions, Rubio will still need to operate at the pleasure of Trump. Rubio’s appointment implies that improvement of relations between the U.S. and Venezuela are fairly unlikely. A main obstacle for hardening oil sanctions is the fact that Venezuela could boycott Trump’s goal of repatriating thousands of illegal migrants. The variety of national interests establishes how these countries can operate and negotiate, as well as what these countries can not do because of non-aligning interests.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Link to article: https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/trump-pick-rubio-could-harden-oil-sanctions-iran-venezuela-2024-11-13\/ Trump, the president-elect, has picked U.S. Senator Marco Rubio for the secretary of state.
