Israel and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah have been in an active conflict that has killed thousands of people after the conflict was ignited by the current Israel-Palestine conflict that began last October. Israel’s security cabinet approved the agreement in a 10-1 vote, confirming a ceasefire to end at 4 a.m. local time. Within the agreement, Israel will gradually withdraw its forces over 60 days at Lebanon’s army takes control of territory near its border with Israel, in Israel’s endurance that Hezbollah does not rebuild infrastructure in that area. Prime Minister Netanyahu said in regards to responding to Hezbollah or any foreign attacker, “In full coordination with the United States, we retain complete military freedom of action. Should Hezbollah violate the agreement or attempt to rearm, we will strike decisively.” Additionally, the U.S. and France will join a mechanism with the UNIFIL peacekeeping force that would work with Lebanon’s army to deter potential violations of the ceasefire.

This ceasefire is not only promising to end the Hezbollah-Israel conflict for a moment of time, but possibility for a peace agreement to be kindled between Israel and Palestine, through the brokering power of the United States. The United States has been seen as an ever present diplomatic tool when it comes to brokering ceasefires. The United States additionally has further motivation to involve itself in these ceasefire deals. The U.S. and Israel has maintained strong relationships since Israel’s creation in the mid 20th country, cultivating trading deals (especially arms deals) and holding strong diplomatic ties in all conflicts and international relation situations. This diplomatic relation still holds strong to this day, thus the United States heavy involvement in this issue.

Liberal Theory, even in a conflict that is heavily relied upon realist ideals, diplomacy, which stands as a core value of Liberal theory, outweighs the realist attempts of power through dominance. Liberal theory is a school of thought that beliefs in the expanding of democratic practices and free trade would lead to a more peaceful world…cooperation amongst states leads to mutual benefits. Reciprocal behavior additionally influences how countries communicate, negotiate, trade, and do business, thus why diplomacy is paramount in the scope of Liberal theory. The United States emphasis on diplomacy is contrary to the actions of Hezbollah and Israel, showing how coercion can be used coinciding with diplomatic relations. It will be interesting to see if this facade of diplomatic relations will continue throughout the middle east, especially in regards the Israel-Palestine conflict, and if there was a deal that was able to be made between Israel and Hezbollah, will there ever be a cease fire or peace deal that is solidified for the Israel-Palestine conflict? This deal may be a first step towards the diplomatic cabaelitility of the United States while intervening, but diplomacy isn’t always able to be a solidified solution, especially towards a conflict that has been present for almost a country.

Link to article On Tuesday November 26th, a ceasefire was brokered between Israel and Hezbollah accepting the agreement proposed by the United States and France.
