Trump has proposed to enact a 25% tariff on goods coming from Mexico and Canada as well as a 10% tax on all imports from China. Trump believes this will suppress the issues of illegal immigration and drug trafficking. To respond to this tariff plan, Canada’s Prime Minister met with provincial leaders to strategize a way to kickback. With the Canadian dollar falling to its lowest value since 2020, Canada is emphasizing the immense harm the tariffs will have on both the US and Canada’s economy. Canada is also making strong arguments about their crucial role in supplying the US with key exports like oil and electricity. Mexico’s president has responded by threatening retaliatory tariffs on US goods because of how interconnected the two countries are. Claudia Sheinbaum also argued that the tariff plan will not solve migration and drug issues, rather she stated: “it is a problem of public health and consumption in your country’s society”. One of China’s embassy spokespersons responded to the tariff plan by emphasizing the mutual benefits China and the US obtain when trading. All three countries are very concerned about the immediate implications of Trump’s tariff plan and also what this could mean for their economic future.

This new plan has many major economic impacts on all four countries with the Canadian and Mexican currency significantly dropping in value soon after Trump announced his tariff imposition. Canada is responding to this by reminding the US of what a significant partner Canada is to them and the US’s economy. This article is important because it shows how one country’s decisions can impact many other countries by creating potential economic consequences and shifting trade relations. Trump’s plan could also cause a trade war with countries combating his tariffs with tariffs on US goods and it could spiral quickly. Canada could approach the new tariffs peacefully and continue to emphasize both countries’ mutual benefits as to not create anymore rising tensions. Canada could also strengthen trade ties with European countries or Mexico in order to create a more stable economy. Mexico could focus on the goods that the US heavily relies on such as produce, auto parts and energy so Mexico has some leverage on the US. China could create targeted tariffs on US goods that are currently politically delicate such as technology. However each country decides to respond, these four countries’ economic state and geopolitical status will undoubtedly change.

When relating this article back to class, the struggle to maintain mutually beneficial trade is a collective goods problem. The US is looking towards its national interest first when proposing tariffs that will only benefit the US further while diminishing the economy of many of their strongest trade partners. As the US is looking towards its own interests, Canada, China and Mexico are likely to follow in order to stabilize and protect their country above all. Although global collective goods are very appealing and can occasionally work well, national interests often hinder mutually beneficial relationships.

Link to the Article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cj6kj2752jlo Three significant trade partners to the US are now very concerned about the potential economic and political threats Donald Trump’s new tariff plan will pose.
