Both announced different stories in their accounts of the discussion. Trump announced that Sheinbaum “agreed to stop Migration through Mexico” but soon after Sheinbaum clarified that she was not interested in closing the border. Rather, she stated she wanted to “build bridges between governments and people”. Sheinbaum and Trump’s conversation occurred just after Trump announced his new tariff plan on Mexican imports with all goods receiving a 25% tax. Sheinbaum initially reacted with promises of retaliatory tariffs on the US but she later retracted her statement by saying there is “no possibility of a tariff war” and Trump and her would continue to talk. Sheinbaum also discussed the concerns Trump had about illegal immigrants and what measures are being taken to manage the issue. Border issues have been a continual struggle and conversation between the US and Mexico; the tensions may only rise higher.

This article is very important because it emphasizes the ongoing strains between the US and Mexico as it relates to border security and trade. The tariffs could have many economic implications such as creating tensions among the USMCA trade agreement and possibly creating an increase in production costs for goods. The disagreement over what was discussed over the phone between the two presidents is also another indicator of increased contention between the counties and what it might lead to in the future. As tariffs are put into place, Mexico may face challenges such as decreased economic growth, loss of jobs, and growing inflation. If Sheinbaum continues to stick to taking more measures to prevent migration it could further humanitarian crises already occurring in Mexico. To become less dependent on the US as a trade partner, Mexico could seek out new trade partners to maintain economic growth and stability. However, Mexico should still continue dialogue with the US and create some sort of “bridge” that might bring the countries together. Whether that is Mexico continuing to control the Mexico-US border or the US lowering their tariffs costs on goods, further diplomacy may be a good idea for Mexico.

When relating this article back to class, the US’s continued imposition of tariffs on countries like Canada, China and specifically Mexico is a form of hard power. In order for the US to obtain its security goals they are using tariff threats to achieve what they want. Hard power is effective in getting what is wanted most of the time but it can create a lot of enemies and backlash. As we can see in this case, the US may be making enemies with Mexico and potential trade relations in the future.

Link to the Article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c89v4w51dzyo The Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum and just elected US President Donald Trump discussed topics of migration, drug trafficking and tariffs in a recent phone call.
