The imposed tariff could cause serious harm to the United States auto industry, as well as increasing vehicle prices, and benefiting China. Whitmer stated: imposing tariffs would damage supply chains and slow production lines and would cut “jobs on both sides of the border. Think about this: 70% of all the auto parts we make in Michigan go directly to our neighbors…. The only winner in this equation is China. They would love nothing more than to watch us cripple America’s auto ecosystem all by ourselves. This is a matter of national security.”

NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement) now known as USMCA (United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement), which was proposed by president Donald Trump in 2018, outlines free trade across North America. However, prospective implications of an increase in tariffs on Mexico and Canadian imports directly violate this agreement. In an attempt to put “America First” Trump is in all actuality weakening the economy, since the tariffs will only do harm to the American economy. And worse, benefit the Chinese economy.

The USMCA correlates loosely to EGO’s (Economic Governmental Organizations) in which participating countries waive a level of their sovereignty to the organization in order to form. These groups work together like any other IGO (Inter-governmental organization) to provide a mutual benefit to the members. A breach in such an agreement would more than likely displease the other members. Thus, Donald Trump revoking an agreement such as USMCA, imposing tariffs on our allies, will only stir the pot. Furthermore, since China will reap the benefit of an economic downturn of the United States, the authoritarian regime could gain sufficient power in the International System to overtake the United States spot as #1.

https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/michigan-governor-warns-trump-tariffs-mexico-canada-could-harm-us-auto-sector-2025-01-15 Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a warner to president-elect Donald Trump of the catastrophic economic outcome of a 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada.
