Tariffs imposed on historically economic allies, Canada and Mexico, now get the brunt of an economy without United States support. However, with 25% tariffs imposed on Canada, Justin Trudeau (Prime Minister of Canada) and Danielle Smith (Premier of Alberta) have no fear, and accept the challenge, interpreting Trump’s actions as ‘an economic war’. Even Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario (manufacturing and automobile hub of Canada) states “a trade war is 100% coming”. Ford is prepared to order the removal of all American liquor from the shelves, an order that will be sent to the Ontario Liquor Control. Canada is the #1 purchaser of foreign alcohol worldwide.

Furthermore, Trudeau and Smith state a clear obvious: “Canada is the energy super power that has the oil and critical minerals that America needs to feed what Trump vows will be a booming U.S. economy.” To put it quite bluntly, Canada is not taking shit from Trump. Ford even acknowledges that Canadians will feel the economic downturn, but it is worth it because Americans will too. To be at ‘war’ with one of the United States closest allies, the neighbors to the north, is appalling.

On an individual level of analysis, Ford presents a clear motive: to retaliate. He isn’t just fighting this ‘economic war’ for his country, for Canadians, but to get at Trump. Perhaps this stance may have a domino effect on other political leaders worldwide. Perhaps there will be an escalation of tension between the United States and Canada. On a state level of analysis, it is evident that Canada will experience economic downturn, however, each Premier (encouraged by Ford) will most likely retaliate against Trump’s tariffs. Then, the United States will feel the same economic downturn. Nothing good is coming from any of this.

https://apnews.com/article/us-trump-tariffs-canada-mexico-cf7aad3aff2c5c429f7d04a69d53530c

Just month out from the inauguration of President Trump, turmoil is already presented.
