Brazil will be limited to just discussing industry related issues, yet are not a part of decision making. Brazil is home to the Amazon rainforest, which President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (in his third term of presidency) has been adamant to protect. He has worked to reduce deforestation and improve indigenous rights, however the economy is not in the position to sustain clean energy. The president argues the increase in crude oil revenue will enable the switch to clean energy. Drilling of crude oil at the mouth of the Amazon river commences. AP news reports “In 2024, crude oil became the country’s top export product, accounting for 13.3% of Brazil’s foreign sales, surpassing soy.”

It is clear that the intentions of Brazil are to ensure a future for the Amazon rainforest. Although the path to a clean future may involve the exploitation of natural resources, one could argue its importance. Bloomberg NEF states that Brazil would need over $1.3 trillion to sustain net-zero energy. The current GDP of Brazil is just under double of the cost. Bloomberg NEF also states that goal will be reached around 2050. Thus, 25 years of drilling will have to occur to reach an economic standpoint to implement green energy. Nothing else can really be done, since the world operates in currency and power, the most biodiversity in the world will have to suffer for 25 years to have a glimpse a brighter future.

On a global level of analysis, Brazil still maintains the same power. Having a seat at the table for OPEC will aid in its economic development, but nothing more will most likely come from this relationship. On a state level of analysis, Brazil will see the rise in economic means, perhaps even allowing a better standard of living throughout the country. Yet, with this rise in economic sufficiency, will Brazil grow money hungry? Will the end goal of clean energy still be met? More than likely, it will be due to the Amazon rainforest. We can only wait and see.

https://apnews.com/article/brazil-oil-opec-cop30-lula-3437780649f1d02bb041bd786131062e

The 7th largest oil producers on the globe joins OPEC, but under differing circumstances than other OPEC members.
