Carney will become prime minister after the Liberal Party elected him in a landslide vote. Carney has stated that Canada will not back down to American aggression, and that it will win the trade war. It will keep retaliatory tariffs in place until “the Americans show us respect”. Trump’s trade war and his claims of annexing Canada have bolstered Canadian nationalism as well as infuriated them. Canadians are now booing the U.S national anthem at sports games and are avoiding American goods and trips south of the border. “The Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our country. Think about it. If they succeed they would destroy our way of life,” Carney said. “In America health care is big business. In Canada it is a right.” The vote on Canada’s next leader is projected to focus on who will best deal with the United States.

This is incredibly concerning to me. Canada is a large country and one of our allies, so annexation seems completely unnecessary, as well as incredibly difficult. Trump is known to bluff and say things that may or may not be true, so the annexation of Canada is still a big question mark, but the possibility that it will happen is unfortunately completely possible. Canada is of course incredibly against annexation, and they have now turned their backs on the United States amid the tariffs. The United States will need to tread carefully in the weeks and months to come. If invasion occurs, the world will lash out in disapproval.

Now the question is what would happen if Trump did decide to invade Canada? All of Canada’s major cities lie fairly close to the border, however it is still a large arctic country, the 2nd largest in the world. It would take a lot of speed, efficiency, and an iron fist to take over Canada and crush Canadian nationalist movements. The resources gained would be valuable, but then Mexico will be left wondering if it’s next. The U.S’ hunger for power may not stop at Canada. It will also require strong leadership to guide Canada through these uncertain times, which Carney seems especially qualified for though he lacks political experience. This threatens Canada’s national security. They aren’t equipped for a preemptive conflict as they are much weaker militarily than the United States and they are also not well equipped to defend themselves in the case of annexation. I predict Canadian guerrilla warfare and lots of terrorist tactics used only in desperate times.

Canada’s new prime minister Mark Carney has already helped steer Canada away from financial crisis, but now must face a looming trade war with the U.S and threat of annexation, as well as an expected federal election.
