Trump had already put 25% on Canadian steel and metals and in response the Ontario Premier (Governor) Doug Ford said that he would increase the prices of electricity prices imported into the US. Donald Trump has stated that he will declare an National Emergency in the regions that are being threatened. Both nations are not willing to back down with the Canadian Premier saying he won’t remove the tariffs until Trump removes all the tariffs it has placed on the Canadians. The result of this shook the economies of both countries as the US investors didn’t like the tariffs as they feared it would decrease the growth of the economy. The S&P 500 dropped almost 1% and the Canadian Stock Market dropped 0.5%. Many economists voted in a poll that the risk of a recession had increased after the tariffs.

The tariffs being put in place and a threat of an ongoing trade war affects everyone within the region. The tariffs are going to raise prices across the nation and threatens the future of the nation. Trump is trying to Canada to comply with what the US wants and Canada is ultimately not complying. This will create tensions between the nations and worsen the relations between them. Both nations are threatening each other with more tariffs if the other don’t comply, for example, Trump said if they don’t remove the tariffs he will put more tariffs on cars coming from Canada starting April 2nd.

Both nations have the option to comply with one another and talk it out diplomatically and that’s most likely going to happen. What the agreement will be is unknown and could go many ways, one would be either Canada or the United States get’s what it wants and one side looses. The other option would be to kind of meet in the middle and decrease tariffs for both nations. That would be the best as it would decrease the tensions the most and help better relations. There are chances that this get’s worse and the tariffs are going to be increased and raised for both countries. Each sovereign state will act in it’s own interest and take whatever’s best for their nation. This would be categorized as an unarmed conflict and has started to become retaliatory. Although the scope of it won’t be super large, it will impact the US and Canadians but may flow into other nations around the world.

Article Link:https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/trump-says-he-will-raise-tariffs-canada-metals-50-2025-03-11/ On March 11th, Donald Trump announced that he would put another 25% tariff on the steel and other metals coming into the United States from Canada.
