The crowd held Mexico flags high and shouted things like “Mexico is to be respected” and “we are united Mexicans” as they cheered President Sheinbaum on. This decision to postpone the 25% tariffs came after Trump acknowledged Mexico’s progress with drug smuggling and illegal immigration. That day President Sheinbaum had planned to formulate retaliatory actions, but instead held a celebration in Mexico City’s main plaza. President Sheinbaum said she will continue to act with a “cool head” in the face of Trump. With this nationalistic rhetoric and confrontation with Trump, President Sheinbaum has been able to garner over 60% of popular support, showing herself as a strong leader. However, the amount of support might not help with the possible negative impact these tariffs (that will later be imposed March 12) will do to the Mexican economy. Mexico relies heavily on trade with the United States.

This shows how economic policies and diplomatic negotiations can directly impact a country’s domestic political climate. The decision to delay tariffs by the U.S. is seen as a victory for Mexico, especially showing strength towards their president and helping gain more public support for her. Tariffs on Mexican goods would have a great impact on the Mexican economy especially since they hugely depend on the U.S. for trade. Not only will Mexico see repercussions, but the U.S. will as well (where many industries rely on Mexican imports), also if Mexico retaliates with perhaps their own tariffs. Not only does this celebration showcase a small victory and relief of avoiding economic strain, but it also shows Mexico’s vulnerability to sudden policy changes from the U.S.. In the future, we will most likely see a stronger Mexican nationalism, Mexico seeking to diversify their trade partners to help reduce dependence on the U.S., and an impact on businesses, workers, and investors in the region. The reasons behind these tariffs are to probably pressure Mexico into particular immigration or trade policies that support Trump’s plan for the U.S.. The delayed tariffs show that Mexico made concessions that the Trump administration desired.

In a liberalist lense, Mexico relies on trade with the U.S., and the delay in tariffs ensured economic stability for both sides, showcasing the benefits of cooperative international trade policies. As the regional hegemony, the U.S. often sets trade terms. However, this event shows that even weaker countries like Mexico can resist or negotiate outcomes in their favor.

Link to article: https://apnews.com/article/mexico-us-tariffs-sheinbaum-trump-8d05ee82f936c8c9bccdde36179a3d5d On March 9th, tens of thousands of people gathered in Mexico City to celebrate with their president, Claudia Sheinbaum, about the U.S.’s choice to delay tariffs on a lot of the country’s products.
